VIZIEL

About us

VIZIEL is a conceptually new medium of visual story telling for all content types. It was launched in February 2021 as a prototype initially featuring over 420K artefacts of cultural heritage provided by official institutions. Each artefact is represented by image, brief description and link to the source for extended information on publisher’s page.

The major focus of the platform is to introduce a brand new way of exploring information where individual visual perception of images in a given context intuitively helps not only to find desired results but also to make unexpected discoveries and to enrich one’s knowledge.

Data source

Currently VIZIEL’s content is entirely based on data sourced from Europeana. europeana.eu is a portal that aggregates more than 3,000 cultural institutions across Europe with over 10 million artefacts. VIZIEL hosts its partial collection limited to open copyrighted images from selected institutions.

Terminology

Artefact is a unique data unit represented by image, informational brief (title, description, creator, publisher, year created, medium, type of object, etc.) and link to the source.
Publisher is an institution providing the artefact and its information.
Creator is a person or collective behind creation of artefact.
Source is a publisher’s page where more information about artefact or publisher can be found.

Disclaimer

Information accuracy
All artefacts and their details are supplied by Europeana’s API services. Due to occasional insufficient or inconsistent API source data, VIZIEL could not guarantee uniform and purposeful representation of information .
VIZIEL’s involvement in its hosted data is bounded by automatic translations of texts to English and publishers into collected from web resources.

Copyrights
Images used on the platform are queried from Europeana API per Copyrights legislation.

Software quality
VIZIEL’s prototype was created in order to portray certain benefits of visual storytelling based on accessible large data set. The future evolvement of the platform implies that additional sources, as publishers and creators will be hosted, after that the development process should be resumed. Therefore, due to limited IT support, the prototype may have some data inconsistencies or technical errors.
